The umbellifer family of plants is considered to be particularly difficult and includes many species that are completely unknown today, but are often very interesting from a folk medicine and culinary point of view. The all-day workshop offers a basic overview of numerous important representatives, which we will work on together in theory and practice. We will also look at the often forgotten medicinal uses of certain species and work together to create interesting folk medicine recipes using umbellifers.
Contents of the seminar:
At the beginning, a botanical introduction to the umbellifer family and an overview of the important ingredients in this plant family.
We will then practise recognizing and identifying selected umbellifers using identification keys and tables. In this way, we learn to identify many species based on important characteristics such as leaves, flowers and stems.
During an excursion into the field, we will discover and identify native umbellifers in the wild.
In the afternoon, we will focus on the spectrum of effects and the processing (from the perspective of folk medicine) of selected umbellifers in theory and practice. Umbellifers are rich in important health ingredients that make certain species particularly interesting plants from a medicinal point of view, even if they have largely been forgotten today.
The course is part of our "VHS Green" course series, which focuses on sustainability and conscious living. Aspects of sustainability are discussed, possible courses of action are shown and reflection is encouraged. The "VHS Green" course encourages personal and social change and promotes sustainable lifestyles. The learning objectives are to acquire knowledge about, for example, ecological, social and economic interrelationships and to motivate students to act in a reflective, responsible and resource-conserving manner. #vhsforfuture #BNE
