Migratory birds have always fascinated us: How do they find their way over thousands of kilometers? Why do some species migrate long distances while others stay put? And how does climate change affect their routes and resting places?

In this course, we embark on an exciting journey through the world of migratory birds. We will explore the diverse strategies that birds use year after year to master impressive migrations between breeding and wintering areas. We will take a look at current research findings, migration routes, navigation methods and ecological relationships.

In addition to theoretical knowledge, the course also offers practical elements such as joint excursions to observe birds (e.g. at resting places) and tips on identifying common migratory bird species.

Contents include

Biological basics of bird migration
Orientation and navigation
Species diversity and migratory behavior
Protection of migratory birds and their habitats
Observation and identification in practice

The course is aimed at people interested in nature with or without previous knowledge. Whether you are an amateur ornithologist, nature lover or simply curious - everyone is welcome!

The ornithology is first carried out as dry training using lectures/videos/sound recordings.
The first date is on Friday, September 19, 2:00 - 4:30 p.m. at 8. Mai Str. 20, 9020 Klagenfurt

The 2 practical days will take place on September 26 and October 03, 2025 in the Klagenfurt area in the early morning hours.
The exact meeting point and time will be agreed with the group.

For anyone with an interest in sustainable topics. Previous knowledge is not required.

The course is part of our "VHS Green" course series, which focuses on sustainability and conscious living. Aspects of sustainability are discussed, opportunities for action are highlighted and reflection is encouraged.
